Accessible UX by Design

The Business Case for Scalable Inclusion

The book that answers “what’s in it for me?”

Most accessibility books are written for the people who build websites. Accessible UX by Design is written for the people who pay for them. Crystal Scott makes the business case for accessibility in plain language, with real numbers and named case studies.

The argument is simple. A website built with accessibility in mind earns more traffic, converts more visitors, keeps more customers, costs less to defend, and outperforms competitors who still treat inclusion as optional. Every chapter answers the same question from a different angle: what is this costing you, and how do you fix it?

Who it’s for

Business owners and decision-makers, especially service businesses. No technical background needed. Every concept is explained in plain language and tied to a business outcome.

Accessibility professionals who sell accessibility as a service will get a lot out of it too. If you’ve ever watched a client treat accessibility as an optional add-on at the bottom of a proposal, this book gives you the language, data and case studies to reposition it as the foundation of a website that performs. Read it to understand how business owners think, then hand it to the clients who need convincing.

What the book covers

  • Earn more. How accessible websites increase revenue and conversions, with case studies from organizations like Tesco, Legal & General and Expedia.
  • Get found. Why search engines and AI tools read a website much like a screen reader does, and how accessibility strengthens SEO and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).
  • Reach everyone, keep them. How accessible UX reduces churn and benefits every visitor.
  • Real proof. Before-and-after results from real client websites.
  • Act now. Fast wins to start this week, plus guidance on choosing a platform that supports accessible code.
  • Reduce risk. The legal reality of digital accessibility, framed as risk reduction instead of fear.
  • Hire right. Five questions for vetting an accessibility vendor or web agency.
  • Skip the shortcut. Why accessibility overlays and widgets are not the answer.

What readers walk away with

  • A clear, numbers-based case for accessibility to take to a budget meeting
  • A homepage blueprint built for conversion and inclusion
  • SEO and AEO checklists written for non-developers
  • A way to tell real SEO and accessibility work from an invoice that goes nowhere
  • Questions to ask before hiring anyone to build or fix a website

Eight companion resources

The book comes with an interactive accessibility ROI calculator, SEO and AEO quick references, a Google Business Profile setup guide, AI prompts for inclusive design, a curated list of testing tools, a quick accessibility audit checklist for business owners, a glossary, and an overview of key accessibility laws by region.
